What You Should Know Before Starting a Courier Business

By Cassandra_BHM | September 15, 2011

A friend of mine used to struggle in his job. He said that with what he was earning, it was hard for him to make ends meet for his family. Part of his job was making sure that their company was able to ship all the orders of their clients within the same day. That was a lot of orders in any given day and he often had to work overtime. Tired and fed up, he took the plunge and retired from his job. He discovered how profitable the courier industry was, seeing how their company and countless others place demands for this kind of service.

Courier businesses are very successful and profitable because of the amount of demand that people from all walks of life place. Couriers provide services to businesses and individuals alike from delivering letters and documents, messenger services to bring flowers and gifts, and delivering large packages.

When there is no other means of having your parcels reach your intended recipient unless by yourself, a courier service will deliver it for you and this is what makes this business very profitable. To keep your clients coming back for more and keep profits pouring in, a courier service should be strict when it comes to promptness and meeting deadlines.

My friend told me that he had quite a number of struggles at first but in just a couple of months, business was good. The

first hurdle he had to take on was raising capital. He needed quite an amount of capital to get started with his equipment such as reliable trucks, GPS, two-way radios, manpower, and more.

The trucks were the single most expensive part of his startup capital. Vehicles for courier businesses do not always necessarily have to be brand new especially for startups. There are many pre-owned vehicles in the market, my friend said, that are in good condition and are being offered at good prices.  With no business background and virtually no savings, he had no luck borrowing capital from banks and other lenders. My friend found lady luck however in bad credit lenders. He got his truck loan faster than he expected and he got to start his business earlier than he thought.

Everything slowly but surely fell into place for my friend’s courier business. He advised that it was very important that for everything to be ready before starting a courier business so that you can immediately deliver right away once customers’ demands are pouring in. He advised too that initial training was very important so he attended seminars and workshops at first and this greatly equipped him to know how the business works.

So to sum up, my friend’s advice regarding a courier business:

Ø  The courier business is very profitable and there is a huge demand in the market

Ø  Timely and prompt service is very important in this industry so clients will know you can deliver

Ø  Capitalization can be found in bad debt credit specialists

Ø  Brand new is not necessarily the way to go when it comes to trucks and other vehicles for the business.

Ø  You have to prepare all equipment before getting started

Ø  Education is very important so attend trainings and seminars to you’ll be equipped to run your business
